I have C282Yx2. It caused my liver Cirrhosis. I found out after 10 years of several doctors and misdiagnosis because of a 23andme genetic test. It has saved my life but I'm not out of the woods yet. My ferritin is over 3,000 and my iron saturation is 105. Iron panels should be standard with lab tests.
Has anyone tried lactoferrin for gut issues??
I think it is us with copper blood lines that have the most problems.
I have a very high ferritin levels and inflammation.
I'm only halfway through this video and so I'm not sure what is in the second half. So far I haven't heard any discussion of ancestral health. Considering the channel, it would be nice to put this in the context of hominid evolution and hunter-gatherer diets.
Iron overload is uncommon, but it does happen. Why does it happen at all? Has it increased with the modern diet and lifestyle? The body, other than with a few rare genes, doesn't typically absorb more iron than it needs, no matter how much iron is available in food eaten.
Also supports why vegans (low iron diet people) has less cases of diabetes, cancer, obesity, etc
Had my Ferritin check and am worried it's too low?
Feritin 17 ng/mL (300-480)
Total iron binding capacity 416 mcg/dL (300-480)
Iron, total 96 mcg/dL (60-165). and UIBC 320 mcg/dL (126-382)
Hemoglobin 16.1 g/dL. (13.4-17)
I was told my iron levels were high In 2009 (350) and I ignored it well I donated blood a few times and never went for a follow up. Now ten years later my skin has been messed up for the last three years a form or dermatitis where my skin develops these slow healing ulcers they are terrible they scar they look unsightly. I had a skin biopsy done last wed and have to get bloodwork before wed aug 13th when i go back to the dermatologist. He’s the only one out of 4 in the last three years to send me for bloodwork. My bp is always high as well due to anxiety but it’s getting to be more chronic. My skins a mess I hope we can resolve and manage this I am worried I may have done irreparable damage
Good presentation. Looking at my numbers it seems obvious that my high ferritin is an inflammatory marker.
Thank you so much for all the details. I'm post menopausal and had my serum ferritin checked for first time ever and it is 321 ng mL. Going to donate blood today!
According to Chris Masterjohn, he suggests that in order to see if the cheaper 'Iron Saturation' test, can be used as a close proxy for Transferrin, you should have Transferrin measured at least a few times to see if:
'Iron Saturation' = ( Serum Iron / Transferrin ) *.79;
Ideally Transferrin should be 30%-40%.
Thanks Chris for your wonderful explanation! Life-changing for the better!
this was very helpful for me. Have had high SI and % saturation from 50 to 140%. for over 35 years. Never had ferritin over 10. Had desferral for 3 years and many phlebotomies which sometimes causes a high rebound of the iron. I am going to implement your info on diet and hope for good results. Do you know of any others who have had a %saturation as high as 100% but never had high ferritin? Mine comes and goes. last episode was due to very high doses of vitamin C
What contributes the most to iron levels in the average person?
Iron supplemented foods (ie flour, breakfast cereal), meat, alcohol?
Regarding the hoarse voice: a sign of hypothyroidism… Try experimenting with iodine, zinc and calcium 😉
I have HH and diagnosed now for 4 years. I went through a period of time where I played with my diet but in order to reduce weight, I had to go low carb and have adequate protein. I guess…my question is really around why reduce so much protein? What is the harm in eating adequate protein and also doing the phlebotomies?
great material Chris, and contrary to the comment below, I love your voice! Great job on this important, nay critical area…
It's probably interesting, but fell asleep from the drawling voice…
Love you Chris!
Very informative. Thank you.
