As you’ll see in the next video, Kidney Stones and Spinach, Chard, and Beet Greens: Don’t Eat Too Much, anyone can overdo the three high-oxalate greens—spinach, beet greens, and swiss chard, so for anyone doing cups of greens a day (as you should!) better to choose any of the other greens, such as kale, collards, or arugula. -NF Team
Calcium oxalate doesn't form in the blood; it forms in the urine. So, if you avoid calcium supplements- completely- and don't go hog-wild with dietary calcium either, your calcium consumption may be marginal, such that there is little to none in the urine. Then, it won't be there to combine with oxalic acid- no matter how much there is of it. I eat quite a lot of spinach. I happen to like it. I like the taste of it better than kale. So, I eat spinach 5 or 6 times a week, and I have for many years. I've never gotten a kidney stone- that I know of. I suppose I could have a silent one. But, considering that I'm 73, it seems like if spinach were going to cause me to have kidney stones, it would have done so by now.
It's all about what you eat. Listen to Sally Norton and Oxalates.
The body can only excrete so much of this toxin at any one time. Naturally increase the amount of Oxalates in the body doesn't increase the shedding effect. However those Oxalates are building up inside your body. Where they can do significantly more harm. All those studies you high lighted show is that Oxalates stay with you for a long time.
Obviously when blood Oxalate levels become too high, our kidneys fail. Oxalates have been causally linked to breast cancer too.

Hello, related to oxalates, Can you please share information related to oxalates and osteoporosis? I am WFPB and eat lots of plants of all kinds. I knew about spinach and some of these other greens containing high oxalate content which I was told binds with calcium in the intestines making it non-absorbable and should be avoided with osteoporosis so I swapped those out for low oxalate greens though just this week learned that many plant foods contain high oxalates, I would say at least half or more of my diet, the deeper I started looking into high and moderately high oxalate foods. Do all high oxalate foods need to be avoided with a dx of osteoporosis? What can someone on WFPB diet eat who has osteoporosis? I watched the other videos on this topic here and many of the foods suggested were also found on high oxalate food lists.
Thank you for looking in to and addressing this critical (at least for me!) topic.
I have one question: is the speaker high on drugs??
Thanks for the most useless information
I was of the belief that cooking spinach reduces oxalates.
Hi all. I believe Dr Greger posted an update on this topic. It's on his channel.
So, a daily raw spinach smoothie yes or no? Thanks in advance!
this dude sounds like he’s trying to pass a kidney stone
I don't understand the table at 0:32, it says that tomato sauce is very high in oxalates, but then the amount in mg is much lower than spinach. I'm pretty sure tomato sauce is safe, but that table is very strange.
I’ve been eating like 3 cups a day of frozen spinach in my smoothie everyday. Probably should back off a little just in case
@2:30 A study with N=6, ie. people is enough to generalize for everyone? No, this is pseudo. Mr. Greger, please learn of scientific process one day! As this is now, it ends up being motivated _disinformation_.
Hi are u ok eating canned beans if u have gfr 69? ( new to this)
WHY DO YOU SOUND LIKE YOU'RE CONSTIPATED?
This is why I hate spinach. Spinach is very high in oxalates + it has a metallic taste.
Thanks for questioning the NARRATIVE
I don’t eat spinach anymore , I had oxalates before going vegan and anxious to see what my urine analysis says next month. It could be the doom to my vegan plans , but let’s face it , we get old we get sick we die, maybe just eat whatever and die should be a new book. No one gets out alive right ?
Sorry for being negative today. On the bright side I been vegan almost two months , love the food lost over 30 pounds.
I just feeling I gonna get a high oxalate report next month.
I used to get kidney stones every time I would visit my parents home. I thought that was weird and asked my doc at the time why I would only get them when I would spend a week or two at my parents house. She then asked me "does your parents have well water or city water and if they have well water do they have a softener?" Answer was well water and yes, they have a softener, I installed it for them. Stopped drinking their water and have never had a stone since.
While kidney stones are dangerous, oxalate calcifications have been linked to many types of cancer. This video is misleading… intestinal oxalate absorption is not strictly a genetic issue. I am a vegetarian, but Mr Greger is spreading dangerous minformation here. A diet too high in oxalates can be dangerous. Read the studies for yourself
Well…Thanks for sharing. But Checkout this recipe for Spinach

Hi, I have been plant-based for 2 years now. I did a urinary metabolic test and oxalate was 13, it was high. I eat some spinach every 2 weeks or something, actually, I consume more salad, veggies, and legumes, why is that?, what should I eat to lower it??? Thanks so much
Are there other foods high in oxalate other than chard, beet greens, and spinach? I have seen lists that name potatoes, black chocolate, almonds, wheat etc.?
Oxalates are extremely toxic . Way to cherry pick your information as usual . Lol unbelievable
When he says things like “crystallises out of solution” you know he’s got a handle on the science.
I am definitely a "super-absorber" of oxalate. I definitely don't have oxalobacter formingenes. Maybe it's because I took a lot of antibiotics for acne as a teenager or because I wasn't breastfed as an infant. I have been following a low oxalate diet for a little over a year and I feel the best I've ever felt in as long as I can remember! I've tried a lot of different diets before (including vegan) but the low oxalate diet is the one I will be sticking with for the rest of my life!
❤️❤️❤️
I love his voice intonation!
Thank you
