This is great advice. I’m expecting my fifth and there can be so much pressure by nurses in the hospital regarding this type of forceful breastfeeding.

Can you please clarify. What is the cause for intense burning and prickling sensation in whole breast especially areola after each breast feed.

I’m pregnant with baby #6 and have nursed all of my babies anywhere from 1 month – 16 months. No matter what advice I’ve gotten the process of nursing has ALWAYS been excruciatingly painful for the first 1-2 weeks and then magically it’s fine. I always chalked it up to my nipples just needing to “toughen up” and get used to the process rather than a technique issue since the pain vanished without me or the baby changing anything. Is this still common?? I feel like this might be the case for more women out there who are told they MUST be doing something wrong if it hurts when really – like labor – it’s just something that we have to get through in the short term to get the full benefits of nursing.

I had a horrible experience with breastfeeding my daughter. I spoke to three different lactation consultants at the hospital and none of them gave me meaningful advice. Breastfeeding was painful and I wasn’t producing. Thankfully I watched one video showing the Thompson Method and that was the only way I was able to breastfeed my daughter for 3 months. The worst advice is them telling me to “sandwich” my breast. When I would do that my nipple would invert making it hard for my baby to latch.
I’ll be having my second baby in a month and I just purchased the course! I am so ready for things to be better this time around! Thank you, Dr. Robyn!

I wish I had seen this video before I got to hospital!!! I regret I allowed nurse to touch my breast. I was scared and felt so miserable that I couldn't feed my baby and was looking for help. I did not know how it should be but it felt so harsh and rude that I still want to cry when I think back. My baby was not getting how to suck and I couldn't get any help from any nurse to show me. When finally one of the nurses came over she was rushing and pressing my baby into my breast, pushing her finger in his mouth and pushing him again into my breast like a little kitten. Now I have painful nipples and watching videos on how to correct position. Why do they make it such a horrible experience at a hospital?

I 100% agree with this!! The lactation nurse was pinching and squeezing my nipple so hard to try to express colostrum to show me how to “properly” latch my baby. He was not interested at that moment, he was sleeping. She squeezed me so hard I had blood blisters and bruised. I had successfully breastfed my older son for 1 year and I had told her that. But she still insisted on showing me the proper way. Because of the horrible pain from that, my baby wasn’t getting proper nutrition and lost a lot of weight because let down was difficult because of the pain. Now I’m struggling with very low supply and have to mainly feed my baby formula. Still trying my best to pump what I can.. it’s depressing. My baby is only 3 months old and my supply is drying up because he refuses the breast and pumping is so incredibly difficult. Please don’t let any lactation nurse touch your breast!

I completely agree with this. The forceful breastfeeding techniques did nothing but cause nipple pain for me. Thanks for sharing and making women aware.

I'm not exactly sure how to get him on the breast properly without using a method to get him on the proper way. He doesn't latch if I'm gentle

There is so pain while breastfeeding how could I overcome this

I have flat nipples. Though I have used all the alternative techniques like nipple shield, puller, pump, etc I want my baby to latch from me directly. I get pain whenever he feeds from me. Also he sucks for hours and still feels less so I have to give him formula milk.
    Could you advise on this.
