That part about turrets video of lived experience, it is extremely helpful for people with same diagnosis to see others similar to them especially if they come from a place where there aren’t others like them to relate to. Seeing traits in others which you share allows objectivity and understanding. It’s another person who understands you. It’s not a show for entertainment it’s creating something to help others.
It’s not wrote learning that is tested and there is more to being gifted than high iq. The operating system for processing information is different and so is neurochemistry and neurophysiology. It’s most similar to ASD. Both gifted and ASD were targeted in eugenics under WWII. It’s urban mythology that gifted adults don’t exist because gifted children magically become just like everyone else at adulthood. All the supports disappear once you are no longer a teenager but all the same traits exist. Social interaction oddities, spiky profiles, more exact communication, hypersensitivity to sound, light, taste, touch etc. sleep difficulties , not match social norms, alexithymia, meltdowns. There is a whole host of other things beyond a test on nonlinear thinking, abstraction and threshold of information processing. The higher the iq the harder it is to properly diagnose ASD from Gifted, both have hyper neuroconnectivity.
It would be great if the wider conversation around eugenics included the implications of reduced genetic diversity and the potential consequences. It is almost like those two conversations are held in isolation, which seems odd to me.
Thanks Thomas, a lot to think about.
