Longest I've ever run? 14.5 miles! I'm excited to run even farther during marathon training (and the actual marathon race)
I see a lot of content going from beginner to marathon. I’m a seasoned competitive cyclist who has the strong aerobic base and strong legs and core, but coming to new to running. Not sure where to focus my time and efforts.
This method of starting really small and building up slowly week after week has worked very well for me. I'm 43 years old for context. I started "running" twice a week in May as part of my physical therapy after an achilles tear Nov '23. I hadn't been running consistently in about 7 years prior to this. The first few weeks were literally 1 minute slow jogging with 1-2 minutes walking in between. Even that small amount got me out of breath and I would have aches and pains for a couple days afterwards. Now, 6 months later I'm consistently doing 6 miles without stopping for my longer runs once or twice a week and mixing in speed intervals about every 7-10 days. No new injuries so far and aches and pains are much less frequent and don't last as long. I don't currently have any plans to run a marathon or even a 1/2, but the amount I'm doing currently has had a hugely positive impact on my fitness, cognitive clarity, and overall well-being.
In the past, training for sports as a youth, or generally trying to improve my fitness—I had vastly underestimated how many weeks/months/years it can take to build up fitness levels as well as tolerance for higher volume without injury. As someone in their 40's I was also shocked by how out of shape I had become in spite of lifting twice per week and indoor cycling a couple times a week.
I just started running for 3 months now, 15 years after a marathon and injuries.
I love the effect of squeezing in exercise bike. Just 30min workout at low heart rate zones that you can't actually run in the first months. Short intervals artificially keep the heart rate down, you're doing the work of high heart rate.
Since at least 25% gets injured starting to run, give the tissue some more rest and start with like 3 runs a week and 2+ low heart rate bike training?
Really great video again. Very informative about how to get started and keeping it going. I have to come back from a knee injury so the idea of run one day and walk the next will help me get my early morning habit again without hurting myself. Thanks!
Good information
Ran a 20 mile workout
I found your channel a couple days ago and been binge watching since. Love it! First marathon booked for May next year. Currently upped the distance to comfortably run 8k from struggling with 2k a little over a month ago
Love this, will share it with folks who think the marathon is impossible.
Thanks Lee your energy and expression are extremely motivating
