An interesting quandary is the acceptance of abortion and the rejection of eugenics. We can ethically terminate all genes in an unwanted fetus, but terminating or modifying a single unwanted gene is wrong? I expect once eugenics is possible it will happen. It cannot be stopped. All it takes is one culture to successfully raise a "superior" generation and the rest will follow suit. I don't like it and hope I'm dead before then. I'd rather not see how it unfolds.
You guys are pathetic
ASD 1 here, highly intelligent and that's what go me diagnosed in first place. I was highly disruptive in class
This sort of thing is just bad. The more we mess with nature, and this messing with nature in big way, the bigger the backlash. We've done it a look at the mess Monsanto has made and risk that's putting the world at. Plants that can't reproduce is not good idea. Great for profits and you have to buy seeds. For all we know that genetically IQ modifier could open up all kinds of mental disorders along with it.
Genetics did not pan out like projected 30-40 years ago. Don't have to worry about designer babies. We can't follow the connection between genome and phenotype, in 99.99% of gene to phenotype investigations. Part of the picture is not helpful when you want to build from foundational levels…
The only people who think eugenics is a good thing don't know how evolution works.
Complex traits like intelligence are polygenic and highly influenced by epigenetic factors, making it impossible to predict intelligence by looking at the genome
I think that autism could literally be a pattern set in early childhood, and that parental eye contact and "too early" attempts at reading, could still be factors.
These were both true, in my case! I can't be the only one. Or else, that it's still possible that other disorders are being misdiagnosed as autism, or assumed to be the same thing, or actually ARE "amounting to" very similar results.
How many parents want au tistic children?
It's not eugenics s when it's about a disease like brain damage.
And let parents decide if they want to be a caretaker for a child with lots of problems or not.
The Au tistic Community is so uneducated and agressive. No reasoning, only "we poor victims please pander OR ELSE!!!".
Of course she approves of eugenics, after that trans video full of lies
Far too many Germans love this idea. It dosent surprise me Sabine plays with these ideas . She has a very high superiority complex but has no big achievements besides her you tube channel which only seems to crap on others ideas rather than putting forth her own “brilliant” ideas.
One problem with eugenics that is seldom talked about is that it reduces genetic diversity
High genetic diversity contributes to positive side effects like herd immunity and low genetic diversity contributes to negative side effects likes congenital birth defects
That's the main reason why most societies discourage inbreeding
if you marry a woman because "she would make a good mother" you're technically practicing eugenics. Simply being attracted to people who are more adapt at survival is a form of eugenics.
Humans and Eugenics go hand in hand. We've been practicing it on animals for millennia, and on ourselves. There is nothing inherently wrong with it. It's only wrong if you're doing wrong things to achieve it. Good luck for your next 32 subs
Standardized IQ tests are useless, and have been known to be useless for quite a long time. The fact that a small minority of researchers still take it seriously doesn't change that fact. A small minority of researchers don't believe autism exists; doesn't mean they're right.
Why would we BREED for intellect, when we already don't do enough in society to allow the full development and expression of our existing intellects?
We can't even agree that children should at least be eating a nutritious and free, or low-cost lunch, especially if they're already forced to be in a school. We can't even guarantee that everyone gets enough sleep, or other forms of rest and relaxation. We are already literally taking books away from communities. WE AREN'T ADEQUATELY CLEANING UP CHEMICAL SPILLS, and other forms of pollution and poisoning.
Hossenfelder has always had a IDW side, but now she's embracing it wholesale. It was probably inevitable that the combination of hanging out with Fascists and having to answer for your bad takes would lead her to seek the embrace of the Far Right.
Not again!
Thank you for your interesting thoughts. To put my opinion bluntly, directly altering a system as complex as DNA will have immeasurably horrific consequences. Dogs are perfect evidence of a few problems that arise from extremely deliberate selection.
In humans, there are many traits that are considered disorders. Sickle cell anemia is a 'disorder' which happens to grant immunity to malaria. Some people are unaffected by riot control gas. I have trouble distinguishing light blues/greens, cilantro tastes like soap, I'm allergic to an unknown plant in the California foothills, and I'm lactose tolerant. Who knows how those traits helped my ancestors survive? Or more importantly, how might those traits help society and/or my offspring?
It's a lot of philosophy that's way too much to cover in a comment.
she’s become a point of reference for anti-intellectuals and flat earthers which is also great. /s
noticed right away that Sabine, in her explanation of who was targeted by eugenicist policies in Nazi Germany, did not actually mention queer people at all, who were subject to such practices both then, and for many decades after, in some countries…
Even if someone doesn't reproduce, if they contribute to the group's survival, his genes are passed on through family members. Selective abortion and eugenics by genetic technologies are completely different from choosing a partner based on their traits.
My grand uncle was definitely autustic from what I know about him, he barely spoke a word but was exceedingly intelligent and a scienctist who invented a form of irrigation that 'would've' enabled parts of the Algerian Sahara to be made green. Should he and numerous other family members have been deleted!?
She has been taking more steps outside of the scope of what she has significant education about. She is an expert in physics, and, I think, quantum mechanics. But for most other topics, she has just googled some stuff for that video.
(at least, that is my understanding. I haven't recently looked into it to reevaluate my understanding.)
idk what anyone says she's based and "normal people are allowed to talk about things" pilled
Some mom of GM baby in the future: My little Stevie? Ohh, he's dumb as a rock, but he does score well in the IQ test! Go figure!
she went from 'science communicator' to 'content creator' when she started talking about things outside her area of expertise, which is physics.
If you really want to see the dangers of this, read Anatomy of a Bar Admission at Florida Coastal Law School. It's about Virgil Hawkins. The Florida Supreme Court Justices were drafting an opinion that he couldn't have his bar admission until he "turned white," a psychiatric condition known as drapetomania applied by white people to black people. If this Sabine thing were taken down the slipery slope, you could even see under the era of Virgil Hawkins that white people would have used Eugenics to eliminate the black race. So, it's not as simple as "picking the traits you want in your child."
Ok eugenics per se, i mean the ancestor tests, fatherhood tests, even checking an embryos, all can be have perfectly fine uses, but we always , always should draw the line by designing or cloning humans.
We actually clossbreed and bred and mixed plants and animals, but humans is the line. And should be a hard no go. And even if its to try filtering out actual terrible degenerative stuff and that maybe, butthats the lime, lets not play more gods than that. We are divers for a reason, and lets not genetic bottleneck humans too.
I also saw gattaca, its a bad idea to create superhumans.
Also you know sabine what seems to shape and make people happier or not, its not genetics, its the environment, it seems to be way easier shaping environments to accomodate, that messing with genes.
Human have way more experience and ability and expertise, to shape environments, so thats maybe whats the actual practical aproach.
Any time where an, itsnt it way better to accomodate the environment instead playing god with genes, is a yes, safer , makes more sense, and it wouldnt be that hard. No eugenics should be brought up.
If its with actual heany genetics disorder, autism is not, maybe , careful, but if you can jus taccomodate actually pretty easy if you tried, do accomodate. Why risk bottlenecking human variety, over refusing to slight accomodate. Mental health is mostly environmental causes affectingit, so back to, humans are actually really good and changing and accomodating environments, so thats the go to, i would assume. Just be slight humaniterian and openminded and not close minded and its solved in a loot cases.
Besides if at least a third humans in their life have mental health issues, its environmental mostly.
Also the thing where, how the hell would being smarter translate to less mental health system? Ok the madness and genius trope, has a basis that yeah being that smarter of course doesnt make you miserable, but way higher chances, i am supe making people super smart wont make them happier.
Hell we have the smartest and knowledgable people technically now.
I would count critical thinking more as wisdom to be honest there. I dont know if that was sabines point, but it makes no sense to try making people happier by making them super smart. To be clear, its a good aspiration to learn but i dont see it translating to less dealing with mental stress.
