Warning! I had normal blood pressure for years, and after following dr. Greger's advice I stopped adding salt, and became dangerously light-headed, dizzy and unbalanced, especially after eating and drinking. After trouble shooting with my doctor, I now add salt to my food again.

I'd like to inform Dr Greger, but you can't contact him for medical concerns. A Google search for the side effects of a low salt diet reveals that most people do not need to cut salt intake.

THE CLOSER THE PLANT WAS TO THE GROUND, THE MORE SODIUM IT HAS. It's that simple :). So eat your veggies and tubers!

Jeff Novick says body needs 250mg sodium per day and our veggies already have that in them. He's another great one to look for guidance if you're going to buy something in a package despite all our pleas for whole foods — he has quick and easy tools for picking good options

No added sodium – OK. But what about Cl? I suffered from low stomach acid because I eliminated salt – cooking home and not adding salt. Eliminating salt can cut in half the production of stomach acid. Heartburn, chest pain and throat pain. Main sources of Cl are meat, sea products and salt. Where to get Cl from then?

When I prepare my own foods (which is the norm), I now use a vegan product called “Better Than Bacon” and/or “vegan Parmesan “ by a company called “Parma!” It has only 10mg per tablespoon yet tastes much saltier. Using that, and being heavy on vegetables and being a vegan who loves cooking beans etc. has made a low salt diet easy.

But . . . I do eat out occasionally and/or use prepared frozen or canned organic foods (like Amy’s Soups or Pizzas etc.) & these have way too much salt, but I need the convenience sometimes. God how I wish that they would at least half the amount of sodium In foods!!

    But dream on! ☹️

Yes, high sodium in blood stream is bad but I think so is "Low Sodium". Please correct me if I am wrong. The sodium level in the blood should be in the Normal range (not too high, not too low). Also the body excretes extra sodium through urine. Cut/Pasted from government studies: Incidence of hyponatremia (Low Sodium, 3million US cases per year) in stroke has been reported to be 11% to 35% in the literature [2,4-5]. The rate of mortality in hyponatremic stroke patients has been reported to be as high as 60% [4].

Is it true that the minimum requirement for sodium is 500 mg? Is it easy to get that on a WFPB diet with no added salt?

My 87 year old grandfather has been admitted to hospital twice in the last 2 months (diagnosed with low sodium) and has been sent home being told there is nothing that can be done for him. He's been prescribed a low fluid intake and weekly checkups, but his energy is drastically low and weight is dropping rapidly. Is there a dietary intervention that can potentially help him in some way?

I don’t eat processed foods; do I need some salt added to my food, or is salt like alcohol, where a zero amount is healthiest?

I admire both Dr Greger & Dr McDougal. I've just noticed that on the subject of sodium, they're out of synch & I wonder why. Here's the link to the McDougal video on. I hope Dr Greger can address their different takes on sodium in the diet.

I would love to hear Dr. Greger's view of Dr. McDougall's position that salt is fine and we shouldn't worry about our salt intake.

The doctor knows there is very little evidence that lower salt intake will affect cardiovascular health:

Oddly enough I changed my diet again to WFPB recently,(many times prior but I'm human), and had a "cheat meal" the other day. It was that or not eat for 8 hours so don't come for me, I got a favorite meal and omg the salt taste was horrible after only a week on the new diet. I had never noticed how salty it was before or how sugary the other things were, like so sugary it made me inhale and hiss like it was hot, I nearly choked. I used to eat like that pretty daily. One week, a bit less, I think it was only 5 days, and you'd be amazed how bad your favorite take out meals actually taste. It was so disgusting that from now on I will be taking grabby foods like apples and carrots or something with me anytime I may not get back home in time for a meal.

Vegetarians who eat cheese are getting a lot of salt from that food alone!
