Wouldn't it be good to see how much Vitamin D ones Body produces in the Summer and see what the Body actually thinks is optimal? Why is none doing that. Might Vitamin D be a big business with all that fish oil crap…
Витаминд
[00:07] If everyone took 2,000 IU of vitamin D a day, it could shift the curve from average blood levels in the mid-50’s to about a 110 nmol/L, which some estimate could add years to our life expectancy. Data derived from randomized clinical trials have convinced some influential experts, such as Harvard’s chair of nutrition, that we should shoot for this kind of range—levels that about 9 out of 10 people fail to reach—because it may necessitate taking between 1,800 and 4,000 IU a day.
[00:41] The (US) Institute of Medicine {incorrectly} considered blood levels of 50 nmol/L to be sufficient, and therefore only recommended 600 to 800 IU a day (for those with little or no sun exposure) because they were only considering bone health {and not optimal health}.
[00:56] Softening of the bones
[01:22] There's even been a charge that The (US) Institute of Medicine simply just made a mistake in their calculations.
[02:20] The target level of 75 nmol/L only sounds high compared to average levels today.
[02:42] If you measure vitamin D levels in those living traditional lives in the cradle of humanity, a normal vitamin D level would be over 100 nmol/L to be sufficient, and therefore only recommended 600 to 800 IU a day.
[03:11] You still have to look at what levels correspond to the lowest disease rates, and when you do, the highest levels do indeed seem to correlate with less disease.
[03:25] It always struck me when I was doing pediatrics that breastfed babies required vitamin D drops. I mean, shouldn't human breast milk be a perfect food?
[03:51] [If] you measure human breast milk these days, it has virtually no vitamin D, and would cause rickets—unless the mom had vitamin D levels up around the level natural for our species. Which of course makes total sense. So it's just like an environmental mismatch the way we live in our modern world.
I saw information on the NIH website that linked mitochondria function regulations, ie normal power output.
Sorry, but I have to disagree with this. First of all, vitamin D deficiencies are not common when you consider that the average person contains adequate amounts of Vitamin D blood levels and within their fat reserves, so it shouldn't be of too much concern to people. In Canada, I was initially flagged as low Vitamin D at 73 nmol/L and having no concept of healthy vitamin D ranges, I went and got myself a 11,000 IU, D3 + K2 supplement. Took that for approx 3 weeks and woke up 1 morning hardly able to breath, nauseous, dehydrated, extremely dizzy, hands and feet started heating up and spazzing/tingling out of control. This wave of extreme hunger also hit. I thought I was dying. It was so bad I was seconds away from calling 911. Only reason I didn't is because I didn't want to risk catching Covid in ER. I thought I was experiencing hypoglycemia or a heart attack. To make a long story short, I didn't suspect the Vitamin D supplements to be the culprit at all, but I did stop taking them for 2 weeks and my symptoms were improving slowly day by day. Shortly after, I started taking the vitamin D supplements again and the daily symptoms of dizziness, nausea and disorientation intensified. Got blood work done and my vitamin D levels are showing 102 nmol/L. I can tell you that maybe natural sunlight at these levels is normal, but not when it comes to supplements. Some people have reported toxicity effects only taking 5,000 IU per day after only 2 months. All my blood work otherwise is normal, i'm a healthy individual (with a lower BMI than average which might have something to do with it). IMO I was never "low" in Vitamin D to begin with, and that's where this problem started. From all the research i've done, "normal" ranges of Vitamin D are arguably between 50 nmol/L – 85 nmol/L based on supplementation. Anyone who says otherwise is just wrong, and I know this through my own experience. Dr. Ford Brewer says he's seen toxicity in vitamin D levels as low as 109 despite 125 being considered healthy. If only people realized that through our sun and food, we maintain adequate amount of vitamin D levels for the most part.
I’ve been taking 5,000 iu per day for about a year and just got my test results: 39 mg/dL
Deficient is < 20, insufficient is 20-30, and normal is 30-100. I want 60-80 so maybe I’ll take more for a few weeks…
Thank you Dr. G!
I live in Baja, Mexico, well below the 37th parallel. By design, I get 20 minutes per day in the midday sun, regardless of weather conditions. I'm wondering if that is sufficient to equal the 2000 units Dr. Greger cites. Does anyone know? Thanks.
So the optimal dose is….. What?
too cheap and effective for pharma?
I've learned to completely disregard association studies. Association studies can be used to generate hypotheses; but they should not be used to change behavior.
Lots of people SHOULD be here in 2020. DR John Campbell and Dr Greger, a winning team!
Nutritionfacts.org
There is a new study from Dr.Hollick which recommends 10k iu a day. Its on pubmed but i didn’t find the link.
Would be nice to hear Dr.Gs opinion about.

I be shirtless outside to gain as much vitamin d as possible.
What about taking Vitamin K2??
How about taking 30, 000 IU every week??
I watched a video on Dr John Campbell's channel with another doctor from New Zealand and he was saying that humans can make all the Vit-D they can from sunshine (provided enough skin is exposed) in around half the time it would take to burn on that particular day, and that we can make up to 10,000 IU per day.
In addition, he mentioned that the cholesterol activated by the UVB light remains in the oils on the skin's surface for a while before being absorbed into the bloodstream and processed by the liver and kidneys, so if you shower after being exposed to sunshine, it is a good idea not to use soap on your torso, arms and legs, just on head, neck, pits and bits.
Astonishing series, probably the best
What about vitamin D coupled with K? I think the results might be better – have you put that to the test?
I take hormone D
Guidelines for balancing D with K?
I’m a very faithful follower of Dr. Greger, however, we did not “evolve”!!! We were created by God!
Is taking every day 2500IU of Vitamin D and taking 5000IU on alternative days produce same results?
What about the potential for calcification of arteries when taking supplemental Vitamin D, which could kill you? I've heard about this in a few places, but here's one.

You forgot to mention genetic predispositions.

Doc, could you make a video on the optimum level of serum 25(OH)D3 for people with CKD, since their kidneys are not as efficient at converting the 25(OH)D3 to the active 1,25(OH)2D3 as that of people with full kidney functions? Should CKD people aim for a higher serum 25(OH)D3 than healthy people? What do you think? And would you include discussions on vitamin K2 in the form of MK-7 (sourced from natto beans) as a vitally important combo with vitamin D, since CKD patients tends to have higher rates of atherosclerotic formation throughout the body, especially the arteries?
Vegan vitamin D3 are readily available now by the way for vegans needing it and very cheap, extracted from lichens.
We'd need a long term study in which there are several groups with no supplementation and then supplementation going up in steps of 1000 IU or so. And then see which group ends up in best health
Take vegan vitamin D3 derived from lichen. Pure and safe.
Can you talk about vit D in mushrooms?
Should I be drinking milk fortified with vitamin D? I see lots of these at the grocery.
Very informative and interesting. For all those confused, what I have been doing for the last 9 months that has changed my health dramatically is 16 min in a bathing suit every day around noon for sunshine (lay in a lounge chair and flip every 4 minutes). My vitamin D levels were stuck at 18 for over 5 years with progressively higher doses of D3 up to 5000 iU daily. What most doctors don't know is that for 15 min in the sun in a skimpy bathing suit your body can generate 25,000 IU of D, and this is what you need consistently if you have been deficient for a long time (which nearly all Americans are). If you live without the sun and your levels are below 30, you need to demand that your doctor educate themselves on the proper treatment of vitamin D deficiency and get on prescription dose vitamin D with regular blood monitoring until your levels get over 75. Sadly the vast majority of doctors are ignorant of the critical need of the body for Vitamin D and how to properly treat the deficiency…
