The role of eating too much.
Your egg constitutes environment, even though it is formed in [grandma's] utero.
Yet, my youngest brother is the only sibling obese, or even overweight, as he was both exposed to FAR more junk food, more parental neglect, and did not have the periodic long releases from alcoholic father and consequent abusive stress imposed, that his older siblings had.
So, i've introduced 3 additional variables in addition to maternal grandmother severe obesity, which made a far vaster difference than did the latter!
While exploring the research on childhood stress and obesity, i noted that in self-reports, over 97[.5]% of the obese reported sustained threat perception as children.
I suspect that the self-report of threat/inescapable violence/stress would have been yet closer to 100%, as we are less willing to admit such occurrence, OR vulnerability to ourselves and, consequently, others, due to mixed parental security signaling.
The basis for MUCH of our own deceptiveness, is highly likely due to such induced confusion, equivocation, and consequent stress.
Thus, behaviors other than psychological overeating to biologically induce Parasympathetic response state, are also epigenetic.
Specific CpG methylation information is being gathered, and it will be some time before all the polygenic and pleiotropic marking is ever untangled from our neural, neurocognitive, and neurobehavioral systems, and therefore biases, contributors to early-imposed, imprinted, beliefs, fears, anxieties, and even pleasures, are unraveled.
Until then, it is necessary to assist children in early developmental stages, from too much unrelieved exposure to (often inadvertently) toxic and overcontrolling parenting.
Extended families, exposure to loving, affiliative grandparenting, and greater free interaction with peers, including a fuller range of subadults, once better resolved many of the severe difficulties to which offspring are exposed.
To speak psychologically, role models and modeling is best restored. Those with insufficient exposure to other cultures, where this greater social community exists, will both suffer, and induce greater suffering on their offspring.
This IS, yes, epigenetic in the molecular sense of methylation, acetylation, deacetylationand transcriptional effects.
But, you WILL notice that our strongly social species was selected for such phenotypic, social remedy for the physical and psychological, remember, ACTUAL, molecular effects that constitute epigenetic developmental variations.
We are more damaged by the isolation i note in this culture, with its overcontrol of subadults and purppseful omission of the full range of affiliative, generous, adults of all ages, in the development of inividuals.
Evolution has proven smarter than humans, and will continue to do so, as our individual adaptations to varying, POSSIBLE, environmental effects, whether they be toxin abuse, alcohol, cannabis, or other , so erroneously overly grasped as remedy.
Early developmental stages are most resilient.
Thus their mistakes are not as catastrophic as are persistent adult mistakes, cognitive or physical. These, as i intend to imply in the scientific sense, are not different.
None of this is disordered. Whatever you observe through phenotypes, individuals, permeates all scales of their being.
Evolutionary selection finds order in complex systems, from each variable, most efficiently. Our very behavior is malleable, with individual desire being part of this evolutionary efficient ordering,
This is, in fact, an evolved way to fix or prepared individuals to become better carriers of their genetic information system.
Certainly, failures exist and occur. But avoiding dogma and therefore persistent errors, is where YOU can best reset yourself, as well as help others!
Adolescents question EVERYTHING for GOOD evolutionary reason.
I just watched this Chef AJ interview, and I am honestly just interested in a review of the study to double check this since it was discussed in the interview. It wasn't the nicest, but I don't think he meant any disrespect. I hope not because Dr. Greger is my hero.

20:50 is where it starts.
Amazing info! Thank you! Please keep these videos coming.
Wow! Very interesting finds.
2:06 wow. That is an incredible statistic. Speaks volumes about how important our diet is, affecting us and future generations..
Calories in calories out.
Did he just use a lot of big words to say the healthier the mom, the healthier the baby?
The methylation and demethylation involved in epigenetics make sense as it may allow organisms to adapt in subtle ways aiding in their survival. Good video.
My kids were all born over 8 lbs and they're all thin adults. Hmmmm…
dr milton mils is vegan and over weghiet
Remarkable.
More on epigenetics please!!! This is fascinating and it needs to become more common knowledge.
Still looking for a 'fat gene' ?
Thanks for the revelation, Dr G. No wonder non of my kids can get fat. When i was pregnant i cannot gain more than 7kg even when i tried my hardest & eat the most calorie dense food like fat & cakes. However whenever i’m pregnant, i always crave that chinese soft tofu pudding w/ sweet ginger soup.
Infections during pregnancy and diet.
Absolutely! Obese women seldom can get pregnant but if they do guarantee the babies will be predisposed to obesity.
I also saw a similar study about sperm health. Obese men’s sperm have negative changes which are reversed after weight loss.
People are asking questions in comments on your videos just to never be answered. What you cant go out of scripted path? Better close comments to not mislead poor viewers.
No study of obese genetic donors with skinny surrogates?
Wait, so we're saying that people who are over weight don't over eat if their mother/grandmother was overweight when they had their kids? I could have sworn, no matter what is wrong with you biologically, calories in, calories out. This is just going to give those who are over weight more excuses not to put the fork down. Eating less(properly) is so hard to do. smh
Such an insightful video, epigenetics affects us much more than we think.
Epigenetics are interesting :0
Thanks. But the very last point, "not an all or nothing proposotion" wasn't clear to me. Does it mean that obese mothers who lose weight before pregnancy reduce risk to the child, even though they may safely gain weight again after the child is delivered? Or, delivered and weaned.
First time I’ve heard anyone discussing epigenetics in relation to diet. Very interesting subject that is barely understood in all aspects, let alone dietary effects.
Great insight, thank you very much!
Epigenetics is waaaay under discussed imo
Hinny. I learned a new word today.

Very interesting…..
