How the Premise of Catholicism Leads to Systematic Error: A Look at the Church's View on Intersex People
I’ve been reflecting on some of the foundational premises of Catholicism and how they can lead to systematic errors in theology and practice. One example that stands out is the Catholic Church’s stance (or lack thereof) regarding intersex individuals.
The Church teaches that humanity is created male and female, based on a literal reading of Genesis (1:27). This binary view is a cornerstone of Catholic theology, influencing teachings on gender, marriage, and sexuality. But what happens when biology does not fit neatly into this framework?
Intersex people — those born with physical or genetic characteristics that don’t align strictly with typical definitions of male or female — present a clear exception to this binary premise. Rather than addressing intersex realities in a robust theological way, the Church’s reliance on this strict male-female duality often results in pastoral confusion and neglect.
For example, intersex individuals are frequently pressured to conform to one sex, sometimes medically, before they are old enough to understand.
Theologically, the existence of intersex people raises important questions about the doctrine of creation. If intersex individuals are "exceptions," what does that say about God's design and the Church’s understanding of natural law?
To me, this issue exposes a systematic error: when the premise of a theological system cannot accommodate reality, it creates pastoral and doctrinal inconsistencies. If the Church’s framework cannot account for intersex individuals in a meaningful way, what does that say about its broader understanding of humanity?
Rice is nice-er on gut lining. Thank you for the heads up on corn, wheat, soy, and sugar! And for Dr. Anthony Jay mentioning Soy acts like estrogen. I did a presentation on it when I was a kid, and when I was making it, I thought it was kinda funny but I was completely serious in my presentation hoping to help reveal the funny business. Praying for RFK Jr. to help kids! Hoping Ben Carson gets nominated so he can help RFK Jr. value, protect, and defend the dignity of life from the moment of conception onward.
